Hey!!! Elder Carter!!!!
First few things. It's my Guitar I love... not the basketball. Second- OF COURSE we will still be best friends!! You have always been my best friend. Alrighty... here is how my week went. Monday- I had tests in History, Science, and English. Tuesday- I had tests in almost all of those classes. That night I think I played my guitar. Wednesday- ROXY AND LARRY AND NORA ARRIVED!!! It was so fun. Roxy and I made pies almost ALL day. We made... Banana cream, chocolate, pumpkin, fluffy pumpkin, lemon meringue, and pomegranate pie! They were so yummy! Thursday- We got up early ( ish) and went to the zoo! It was so fun. Although, i'm not going to lie... I missed you! We didn't get hot- chocolate. Although. I'm pretty sure your "Hot chocolate loveness" rubbed off on me. That night we had turkey, stuffing, casserole, potatoes, etc. for dinner! It was so yummy! How was your Thanks giving? Friday- We didn't go cut down our tree... mom and dad went and cut it down from Smith's. It's actually a really pretty tree! It's so full and big and tall... I love it! We made cookies all day! ( for the tree) That night Jordan Benson came over. We played BANG. It was really fun! Saturday- We ( Mom, Dad, Larry, Roxy, Nora, Toph, and I ) went to the aggie football game! It was beautiful! We won 45 - 9. It was so fun! We came home and finally. (7 years later... I think) we learned how to play "Settlers of Caton". Such a fun game! After the game. ( which we didn't finish) Larry, Roxy, Toph, and I went to the Aggie basketball game! We won... 65-55! Woot! Woot! That night we came home, ate pie, and watched Elf! Sunday- I went to church, came home played a game... later... Roxy and Larry had to leave. I rocked Nora to sleep! She's so cute, and so big! Such a sweet heart. Alrighty spiritual thought. I'm pretty sure I have said this but. BE YOURSELF! Don't try to be some one else. Just be who you are! I love you so much! Have such a great week!
Love,
Nina

Dear Daniel,
Hello!  We hope you have had a good week.  How was your Thanksgiving?  We thought of you so much and hoped you were having a good day.  We said hi to all the animals at the zoo for you, especially the baby snow leopard.  Did you see that baby before you left?  He is 7 months old.  Did you get to eat some turkey?  We ate some in your honor.  One of the most amazing things was watching the polar bear claw at a pumpkin to eat some of its meat - wow she has big paws!

Roxanne, Larry and Nora drove all night from St. George Tuesday and just went home tonight.  We had a wonderful time together.  Grandma Kenna came on Wednesday and left Saturday.  It was great having everyone here with us for Thanksgiving weekend.  Grandpa Paul and Joan Montgomery also joined us for dinner.  Little Nora is just growing and growing!  She is so smiley and fun, just squealing in delight and such a darling, good baby.  I know I am not partial at all.  I'm sure the rest of the family will give you more details, so I won't repeat all the activities we did.  In all honesty I'm afraid of making you homesick.

Daniel, thank you for sending us your letter to your mission president.  You can do that all the time if you want to, if it is easier.  I've actually thought myself that I should be copying my letters I send to you  - into my journal!  I seldom make time to write in it - but I always make time to write to you .  Maybe I could do both in one fell swoop!   Anyway - your letter really gave me a more accurate picture of the challenges you face every day.  I know better how to pray for you and Elder Tuisku.

Thank you so much for the Christmas ideas and desires that you have.  When you asked for a picture did you mean like a family picture with our testimonies - that you could give to investigators?  Or, something that you would just keep for yourself?  Would it be helpful to have some copies of the Book of Mormon with our pictures and testimonies in them or do you have plenty?

Congratulations on your solo!  I'm sure you did great!  The important thing is that even though you were the only one, you stepped up and sang a solo - instead of refusing to sing at all! I am very proud of you!

Oh by the way!  Roxy brought pictures of you and Elder Tuisku.  You look great!  You look happy.  Remember, that with every door you knock, every referral you check, every member you talk to, every lesson you teach - you are planting seeds.  Some of these seeds need more water, sunshine and rich, brown soil full of nutrients (gospel sod) to take root and grow.  But still, you are planting seeds (and sunshine, just because you are a sunshiney person) to all who cross your path.  So, my darling son, just keep working hard "For behold, the field is white . . . and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul."  And by and by you SHALL reap the fruit of your labors, for "the field is white" - and ready to harvest.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  We love you and we are proud of you.  Have a very happy last week of November.

I love you so much - a whole world full!!!
Love,
Your Mama

Hola Son!  How are you?

It's been a great week here.  After receiving your email, we moved forward with our Thanksgiving holiday.  Know that our thoughts were with you each day.  We wondered in our hearts and aloud often what you were doing and how you were celebrating this festive holiday.  I know that you are in a new environment, so that many elements are beyond your control, but at the core you are living and teaching what it is that we are most thankful about, the knowledge of our Savior and Redeemer.  That He came into the world, suffered personally for each one of us, and through Him, we may return again to our Heavenly Father's presence.  A simple plan, presented totally with love.  So, happy Thanksgiving.  Happy approach to Christmas, which then will bring us around to a wonderful New Year.  Enjoy each and every moment because they move by rather quickly.  Don't look ahead, stay in the moment.  Work with the calling that is in your heart and soul and time will be a blessing to you.  You will never have to say, "I wish I had more time" because you will have worn out with work, service and love the time you are in.  Then move on.
I'll tell you a little about our week.  We worked until Wednesday, late.  Larry and Roxanne +Nora arrived middle of the night on tuesday.  We had lots of fun preparing for cooking and cooking for Thursday.  We got up early thanksgiving morning.  Our goal was turkey in by 7, seared until 7:20, then drop the temperature to a slow cook and head to the zoo.  We were off by about 40 minutes. Left for the zoo at 8.
The zoo was fantastic, as always.  Lots more people are discovering the beauty of "Feast with the Beast"  I remember so clearly how quaint was our first visit.  No one came except a small number of us.  Seems like 30, but were probably 90 or so that first time.  Nothing has changed in presentation, only in number of people and in the quality of the habitat for our zoo friends.  There were hundreds there this year.  Still few enough to get good views of all the feedings (it does help being 6'7"", no one gets in my way...)
We saw the elephants first.  They get those huge pumpkins and squash them with their feet, or pick up the smaller pumpkins with their snout and just place it in their mouth like a cough drop.  It's amazing.  No red panda this visit.... ah, the memories..  But we did see them feed the polar bear, brown bear, wolves, snow leopard (yes, that one was for you). And probably a few others that I can't remember.  It was a beautiful clear day, brisk but not cold.
After the zoo, we headed back to Logan to pull the turkey from the oven.  I had slow cooked it, so it took a bit longer than expected.  I planned on 6 hours and forty minutes, but it took another two hours to pop the timer.  so, our four oclock dinner was about 5:30.
We had a new presentation of brocolli that was a big hit.  Kind of an improvised casserole made in the big skillet with cream of chicken soup and fresh chedder cheese.
We also had lots of pies, mashed potatoes, peaches, green been casserole, stuffing, turkey and gravy.  Oh yeah, Joan brought rolls and a pie.  Grandma Kenna, Grandpa Paul, and Joan Montegomery joined us for the event.
The next day, Karen and I went to town to cut a tree down.  Mister Lowe's did the handy work for us.  A Grand Fir this year.  Beautiful.  The home crew made a double batch of tripled cookies.  There was a mad decorating party and plenty of cookies on the tree, a few on the side.  But, now, a few days later, the tree is bare, the pan empty and it looks like another batch will have to be made to sustain the tradition.
Saturday, we all went to the Aggie Football game where we made school history by going undeafted in the WAC, being wac champions, having a 10 win season, and according to today's football polls, 20th in the nation.  What a historic day for aggied football.  Be a proud aggie.   Mama and I stayed home and baby sat Nora as the rest went to a basketball game that had great results, too.  Then, games were played, exhaustion reached and the sabbath rolled in like a fog in the night.  So, up early for meetings, a nice sacrament meeting.  We had a delightful young couple speak in our Sacrament meeting today. He told a cool story which I'll pass along.  He spoke of going to Disneyworld as a kid of 10.  He was with his family.  He saw a great statue made of LEGOs.  He went up to touch it, then when he stepped back, he looked left, then he looked right and didn't see his family.  He panicked and did what a panicked ten year old sometimes do, he took off running.  He ran and ran, then grabbed a light pole and cried.  Someone came up to him and asked him what was wrong and he sobbed that he had lost his family.  They took him to the lost kid booth, (I'm sure it has a name) and his family had just left looking for him.  He was quickly reunited.  When he asked them why they left him at the LEGO sight, they said, we didn't leave you.  We just stepped back because we thought it made a cute picture and you took off running!  How often we look left, look right looking for the savior in our life and then when we don't see him where we expect to find him, we take off screaming, when in reality, he is there standing right behind us, supporting us all along the way.
Well, I love you Daniel.  I am proud of the work you are doing in Texas.  It is not easy being a missionary. As I work with our missionaries here, I see the challenges, the unresponsive ears and hearts, and the seemingly endless search for those that have been prepared.  But, then again, I see the joy that is in the hearts of all as the knowledge of our Saviour comes into our lives.  It is worth all to the struggle that you may endure, when in the end, even if it is only you that knows that He is there for you.
I could talk to you all night about how significant the seemingly insignificant really can be.  I look back to my own baptism, I was just doing what I knew to be right.  Not this huge event, but something small and simple.  In retrospect, that moment changed my entire life.  Same thing about going to the temple for the first time for me.  I was on my mission, and I went for the first time to the Provo Temple.  I knew noone, so the event was not surrounded by lots of family, but was simple and focused just for me.  There was no one to hug when I was done, no high fives to give for successfully accomplishing what in fact is one of the most significant events in my life.  I hope that we have allowed that same experience to happen in your life.  Of course, we couldn't help being there to hug and high five, but in the end, it was your experience, you and the covenants you made with your Heavenly Father.  A simply beautiful exchange that will anchor your soul for the eternities to come.
Oops, I'm over my time....
Do you want these letters printed out and sent to you?  I'm not sure if you have access to a printer where you read these.  I know that we print out yours and read them many times each week.  Your letters mean the world to us.

Love you.

Pa

Letters to Daniel November 18th, 2012

Hey!!!!! Elder Carter!!!! How are you? HOw's the warm Texas? Guess what?!?! it's RAINING ( and thundering, and lightening). This week was fun! Alrighty here I go.... Monday- Mom and dad came home from California! I was so happy to see them! Tuesday- I think I had a bunch of home work that I had to do... I can't remember. Wednesday- I went to young women in excellence! My projects for Individual worth and faith are completely done! Thursday- I had two tests! One in my science test and the other in my history class! Friday- It was the last day for 1st trimester. No more art! Instead, I get to take choir and gym! I have both of those classes with my bff's! I'm so excited. Mrs. Francis is my teacher for choir and Mrs. Godridge is my teacher for gym! Oh! I also finished making my boxer shorts in sewing! They turned out pretty good. If I don't say so myself. I'm so excited to take choir! Saturday- I had a basketball game. We lost. It went pretty good though. I talked  it over with momma and myself and decided that basketball isn't really my thing. I love basketball and every thing about it, but, my dreams and goals in life aren't to become a professional basketball player. I have different dreams and goals. Sunday- I went to church! It was so fun! We also got these yummy suckers made out of chocolate! mmm mmm. I've been practicing my guitar almost every day I can! I love the way the guitar fits into my hands, when I lay my fingers over the board and press down hardly so that when I strum those five, four, or three strings they will vibrate in perfect tones to create a loved chord!
Spiritual thought of the day- today we had bishop's Youth conference. We got challenged to not complain for the next 24 hours! Instead, think of things that you're grateful  for. So my challenge for you is to not complain about any thing for the next 24 hours. Say things your grateful for! I love you so much!
Love,
Nina.
p.s. I'm working on History Faire all this week. I need to decide my topic by saturday or else I'm not going to do it. THe project is due in January!! Yikes!!! I'm super excited! I love you!

Nov. 18, 2012

Dear Daniel,
Hello! It's only been a few days since we got your last letter. You sound
great! You sound like you are enjoying your work as a missionary of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There is a saying that missions are the
worst of times and the best of times. I think this is true! I remember having
some thrilling highs - with investigators, with teaching, with the excitement of
doing the work, riding bikes fast, the wind blowing my hair everywhere, laughing
and finding joy as I taught the gospel. I also remember the lows - baptisms
that almost happen, but don't, appointments that fall through, sickness,
disappointments, etc. The hope is that most of the time you will stay somewhere
in the middle - plodding along, charting your course then following it - even if
it gets monotonous or boring; keeping the commandments and the mission rules
with exactness, and doing all that your mission president and The Lord require
of you to qualify for his blessings. This will make the highs, when they come -
that much sweeter.

So?? Do you have any DEFINITE plans for Thanksgiving now?? We will be having
dinner at our house with Roxy, Larry, and Nora, Grandma Kenna, Grandpa Paul, and
maybe a couple of others. We have invited the sister missionaries to come too,
even if they just drop in - or in case their other invitations fall through. We
will be thinking of you too, and know that someone in Texas will be lucky to
share Thanksgiving dinner with you and Elder Tuisku.

Speaking of Elder Tuisku - when you said he had "something new now" were you
saying he is sick again -or still? Do you two still have a car to use or are
you on bikes? Does his family write to him every week? Will they send him
Christmas gifts? Please tell me okay - because if they don't - then we want to!
If you have any specific desires for Christmas then please tell me by the NEXT
letter, right after Thanksgiving. I want to have plenty of time to mail
packages.

I'm so glad you remember when I dyed my hair pink! It was pretty funny.
Remember how I took the towel off my head, shrieked "It's pink!" and promptly
dried and dyed it again? That color pink? It was the same color we saw head
after head at the Taxi Convention! I was ahead of my time ha ha.

Dad gave a wonderful talk today - on music. I told him to tell you more about
it. He is such a great speaker - so strong, firm, and passionate about the
gospel and life! I love to listen to him talk.

Talking about food . . . have you got a crockpot in your apartment?? This might
be a way to cook and eat fantastic food - and have it not take much preparation
time . . .

I am so grateful for the Holy Ghost. I have felt his companionship this week
especially as I have run from one thing to another. Tonight, as I made calls to
check on my Relief Society sisters I felt him prompt me, and know how to
comfort, build or just support a sister and her family. How grateful I am for
the true gospel of Jesus Christ. It blesses my life every single day. It helps
me to find love for other people and see light in them that I might not see
otherwise. I appreciate the insight you shared about less active people too.
It helps me in my work in Relief Society and in my work at the hospital.

Work hard. Pray hard. Play hard on P Day. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.
We will say a special prayer for you and Elder Tuisku. If you start getting
discouraged then just pull out your fingers, and count your blessings, one
blessing for each finger. If you still feel discouraged then go through all 10
fingers again, and one more time - repeat as needed. We have so much to be
grateful for. I am especially grateful for you Daniel - my strong, handsome
youngest son. I am grateful for your testimony, and for following your desire
to serve a mission for our Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you for being Elder
Daniel Carter. Thank you for always blessing my life.
I love you!
Love,
Your Mama

Dear Daniel,
It's been a busy week since arriving back from california.  It was so nice to go away, and the drive home was very pleasant.  I'd do it again in a minute.
It's been a busy week getting back into the swing of things here.  It started with classes at the University on Tuesday, then Wednesday raced by for no apparent reason, then classes again thursday day and night, then friday was a long work day in the studio.  I'm doing some arrangements/minus tracks for Mystique Theater's production of Miracle on 34th street.  Tried to make headway into that.  Saturday, i thought I'd use as another strong day in the studio, but I was distracted away by the Utah State vs Louisiana Tech Football game.  What a nail biter… I thought we were comfortably ahead, but LA came storming back.  They looked strong and powerful.  The were tearing us apart in the second half only to eventually tie the game in the final second.  They went into overtime and we scored first, then they had the chance and we stopped them!  We won  48-41.  Wow.  It was my turn to speak again in church this week.  (every third sunday!)  I was able to speak in the Logan River 1st ward with Bishop Sainsbury. They asked me to speak about music.  What a tough subject.  Below are my notes.  They are a little scattered, (aren't they always) but mama says I did well.  She's so supportive.  We love you.  We pray for you all the time.  Hope you are enjoying the work and the challenges that come your way.
Have a great week.  A Happy Thankgiving.  We'll think of you, but we know you will be taken good care of by those in "the Berg".  We'll take lots of pictures so you can enjoy our family traditions from your perspective this year.  I encourage you to make your own traditions.  Yes.  Even in the mission field you can have traditions.  Who says they have to be repeating.  Create new ones.  If someone asks you how long it's been a tradition, say, this is the beginning of a long, long tradition.  Do something daring.  Something outreaching.  Something nice.  Something beyond ordinary.  You will find so many wanting to serve you.  Serve them.  Sing to them.  Tell them a story.  Be yourself.  That is who the Lord wants you to be.  And, may I remind you, you are a man of tradition.  Just look at your face.  It carries on it the tradition of all who love you and pray for your success from both this earthly life and the eternal family that roots for you each moment of your life.  Feel the strength.  You can do anything.  Establish a tradition.
Love
pa

Here are the notes from my talk…
Using Music as a blessing to our families.

Music is a tool…
2 Nephi 25:
23For we labor diligently to write, to apersuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by bgrace that we are saved, after all we can cdo.
26And we atalk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we bprophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our cchildren may know to what source they may look for a dremission of their sins.
29And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and aworship him with all your bmight, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out.
Now all my might mind and strength and my whole soul is centered largely around music.

Mormon 7-5-7
5. Know ye that ye must come to the aknowledge of your fathers, and repent of all your sins and iniquities, and bbelieve in Jesus Christ, that he is the Son of God, and that he was slain by the Jews, and by the power of the Father he hath risen again, whereby he hath gained the cvictory over the grave; and also in him is the sting of death swallowed up.
6And he bringeth to pass the aresurrection of the dead, whereby man must be raised to stand before his bjudgment-seat.
7And he hath brought to pass the aredemption of the bworld, whereby he that is found cguiltless before him at the judgment day hath it given unto him to ddwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the echoirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Ghost, which are fone God, in a state of ghappiness which hath no end.

Popular vs Secular and why the music of the church suffers.
I recently attended a conference on contemporary music

Music   Hymns vs Popular style

Hymns are not pop music.

In order to appreciate the hymns in our pop culture we must understand what makes your favorite music.

The key to understanding  what the difference is between pop music and church music.

In pop music, there is one important pronoun that must be included for the song to relate to others.  It is the pronoun "YOU".

*List 10 song titles from pop with the word "you" in it…
1. You Belong With Me- Taylor Swift
2. as long as you love me
3. let me love you
4.I Think I Love You- Diamond Rio
5. adele someone like you
6. one direction …  Your hand fits in mine, like it's made just for me

Let's look at the mormon anthem, "I am a child of God"

Rght away, it reveals the secret to music in the home and in our religious lives.

"I"   This song is meant to be sung, not listened to.

How many hymns use the word "I", the cardinal word breaker for pop music…

List to
1. I believe in Christ
2. I know that my redeemer lives
3. Where Can I turn for peaceWhere Can I Turn for Peace?
4. Abide with me
5. Lord I would follow thee
6. o my father
7. how great thou art
8. i stand all amazed
9. i love to see the temple
10.

The word "you" brings you in as a listener.
The word I kills pop music

It is the key.  Religious music is meant to be sung, internalized and vocalized.

If you listen to music, there is the 2 minute wall.

If you are internalizing the music, the wall is gone.  It moves from entertainment, listening pleasure to an inner expression to God

Pop music must have vain repetitions to be digestible to the listener.

God teaches us in prayer to have no vain repetitions.
The song of the heart is a prayer unto me.

Music then is vocalized prayer.

If you just sit and listen, you will be bored at two minutes.

Part 2:

There is music in the wind…

There are many things I love about winter.  I love the storms and the wind.
I love to hear the wind blow.  It is music to my ears.  It really is music.  There is a term for it.  It is called noise.  White noise to be exact.  Noise in a musical sense is all pitches sounding at once.  It is the same sound a television makes when not tuned to a channel, or a radio makes when not tuned to a channel.  But man's noise, is not nearly as creative as god's noise.
Wind is every leaf, blade of grass and branch singing it's own pitch at the same time.  If they were all exactly the same, it would be one giant single note.  But it is not the same.

So I listened to God, and I hear a sweet message.  We are all his.  Everyone of us.  He loves us, he stirs us and we glorify him.
Every one of us is valuable to him.

verse 1 I believe in Christ…

1. I believe in Christ; he is my King!
With all my heart to him I’ll sing;
I’ll raise my voice in praise and joy,
In grand amens my tongue employ.
I believe in Christ; he is God’s Son.
On earth to dwell his soul did come.
He healed the sick; the dead he raised.
Good works were his; his name be praised.

I'd like to speak of Value.  We are priceless creations of God, our value is in His hands. The value is His.  We are his worth.

So, when the winds come, I want my roots to be anchored in firm gospel sod.

***** Verse 3 of I believe in Christ…
3. I believe in Christ—my Lord, my God!
My feet he plants on gospel sod.
I’ll worship him with all my might;
He is the source of truth and light.
I believe in Christ; he ransoms me.
From Satan’s grasp he sets me free,
And I shall live with joy and love
In his eternal courts above.

In my life, I realized that I wanted to make this tree that the wind blows through be my family.  I wanted one tree to represent my family,  The images of family history and geneology started to sneak in.  I started think of myself as a family tree.  But that is not how this works.  We are each unique.  I am my own tree.  If a branch breaks because of weakness, it is my branch that has broken.  I am responsible for the roots through the trunk to the branches and the leaves.

How do I make my tree strong?  Because if I can learn I can teach and share.

****All trees need at least four things to live: sunlight, water, soil and air.
I must have a strong root system.
I must have a strong light source,
I must have nourishment.

My light sources is God.  I see him in everything.  His light shines on me everyday.  That light excites my soul, and inspires my faith.

I feed my soul everyday with his word,  I gain strength from knowledge.  Everything teaches of Christ.  I see that.

I reach deeper and deeper each day into the earth that anchors me.  My root system is dependent on the nourishment I give it.
Gospel Sod!  If I wait for the day of the storm to nourish my roots, it will be too late.

The air is who and what I surround myself with.  It is given voice by the wind.

And in my life, air carries the sound of music.

I love the wind.

My hope is for every fiber of my soul to sing when played by the tempests of nature.  That my roots will be strong to withstand any force that may be exerted upon them.
That my fibers will be nourished and that the light of God reflects in me.

Then, when we understand this, we will teach others.  When we are firm in our faith, we can help anchor others.

I’d like to tell you of another storm in my life.  It occurred during the Martin Harris Pageant.

I had heard how over the years, the rains would come and then miraculously blow around the outdoor pageant.  One night, I saw the rains heading our way.  Huge storm clouds blowing up from the great salt lake.  I thought to myself how cool this was going to be to watch the parting of the clouds as they missed the pageant.  Almost like the parting of the red sea.  I stood there and waited as the storm grew nearer. Then, at the moment it was to hit us, it really did hit us.  It wiped us out. The pageant was flooded, parking lots turned to rivers of mud.  How could this be.  I was mad. Mad at god.  To make things worse in my mind, I had heard a few days earlier that a fellow member of the pageant had cancer.  It wasn't fair.  So, I told god what I thought.  Then, I wrote this poem.

I wrote the following

Faith/Doubt
I prayed that the Lord would stay the winds
and hold the rain,
but it wasn’t His will
I prayed that the Lord would deliver health
and heal the sick,
but again, it wasn’t His will
I prayed…
And then the spirit touched me
and I begged forgiveness
for underestimating and condeming
Because in every way I look at it,
I see the Lord’s hand.
I see deliverance from infermity
by spiritual healing
and not always physical healing,
I see deliverince from poverty and financial burdens
without the use of money,
I see spritiual intervention to those who seek it.
It is closer than we know.
I see release from worry,
amidst the greatest darkness.
I see the Lord’s hand in everything.
I pray the Lord will stay the rain,
and if I should again hear the waters coming
I pray for unquestionable trust in the Almighty,
Who has always cared for me.

(Inspired by MHP invocation asking to stay the winds and stop the rain from coming during the evenings performanc. We were
cancelled in the last fifteen minutes because of the worse rain, thunder storm in years. The parking lot turned to mud. Everybody
gathered to help push cars that could not get traction. Everybody was covered with mud from head to toe. Electricity went out
and children were frightened, especially Christopher. The health part is dedicated to Sis. Ruth Buttars who in years past has
played Annie Jardine. She has cancer. She is expected to live 6 months to 2 years. She is home and cooking her husband dinner
now after being home two days from the hospital and her operation.
August, 1999 again the MHP is underway. Sister Buttars did pass away last January. I will miss her. I didn’t know her well, but
I felt her faith.
Unquestionable trust.
Notice the date. 5 days before Kristina was to be born. We were in no way expecting her to come early. I didn’t realize I had
written the poem for myself.

Anger, then humility.  Five days after writing the poem, Karen went into premature labor and Kristina was born.  It was probably closer than that.  The date on the poem was Aug20th, Thursday.  Karen started having problems Saturday.  I did the show that night, but drove to salt lake immediately following my appearance as moroni. Kristina was born the following tuesday.

God had prepared me to have faith in the storm that was about to enter my life.

Concluding line of I believe in Christ verse ?

I believe in Christ, who marked the path,
Who did gain all his Father hath,
Who said to men: “Come, follow me,
That ye, my friends, with God may be.”

I know that God will be with me through the storms in my life.  Storms have come and will come. My feet are firmly planted in Gospel Sod.  The lines of the songs I hold dear to me rush to my rescue when times of trial near.
God loves us.  He hears us.  He stands by us always.  Always has, always will.

If time, tell the bow story...  (there wasn't time for this, btw…)
Music is a tool…
bonus thoughts…
We must realize that being a part of this righteous generation is eternally exciting.  We must realize that there is passion in living the gospel.  It moves us to our very core.  We must shout from the roof tops and move mountains with our faith.  There is nothing quiet about living the gospel of Jesus Christ.  There is a place for quiet reverence, but there also is a place for proclaiming the gospel to the four corners of the earth.
we must begin to associate our heroes and our truths with energy.
The story of the three bows.
Heavenly Father is the Master Musician.
We are the finest of musical instruments.  An eternal symphony awaits.
And, as we are the instruments,   there is an element that lies between the musician, (our Father in Heaven) and us the instrument, that would be the bow.
Christ is the bowmaker
How is your bow?  Let me tell you a little about bows.  Bows have a life all their own.  A young musician will use a fiberglass bow.  Sturdy, unbreakable, limited.  Not yet complete, but advancing. Nuances of life have not yet been place in their hands.
As time advances, so does the musicianship.  A finer bow is used.  One that can handle the agility and nuances that fine music demands.
Fine wooden bows can produce intricate interpretations in your hand.
I have a very special bow that has a special story
I have one of the finest bows ever made.  Made by Eugene Saltori of Paris in the late 1700’s.  Musicians when they see the bow say, “a fine craftsman who loves his trade must have made this bow.  Look at the curve of the point and the delicate balance.  This is a fine bow, the finest.  It’s value was that of a new car. But, now it’s worthless!”
Worthless!  Yes, it is broken.  Unrepairable.
I believed that for years.  I had taken it to the finest shop and they told me it was of no value.
How many times have we labeled people of no value.  How many times do we feel that ourselves. That we are broken and nothing can mend us?  Well, it’s not true.  After years, I finally searched out another bowmaker artisian.  He said, “Of course I can fix this bow.  If it needs a new frog, I will build it, if it is broken here, I will fix it.  There is nothing I cannot repair.”  It was true.  He repaired that bow and today it inspires the most wonderful performances.
Jesus Christ is the master bow maker.  He can repair any break or fraility in our being.  Don’t believe when someone says that you are irrepairable.  It is not true.

Christ is the bow maker,  Heavenly Father the Musician, you are the bow. Playing upon our eternal being.  We can reach the hearts of others as we realize that all  Healing is possible, even when everyone else says no.

Let Christ Heal your bow, Let Heavenly Father Bring us all together and we will be a tool in His hands.

Elder Carter! How are you? How's your mission going?
Alrighty, my week was pretty good so to start it off... Monday- We had family night... I don't exactly remember what we did. Tuesday- I did home work. I also worked on writing lyrics to songs! Wednesday- I went to mutual we did family history. I also went to my first basketball practice! Thursday- I went and saw Legally Blonde! Oh my goodness, it is just way to fantastic! Friday- I went and saw Legally Blonde again. I also went to dinner with Alyssa and Uncle John! Saturday-  I woke up, did a couple of house chores. I then went to my first basketball game! It was super fun. We lost... sadly... but, this was the very first game of the season. I did pretty good. I have got to work on my re-bounds. OH. also, this kid that I think is pretty cute. Any ways, he is one of my coaches, grandson! It's a small world! So any ways, his grandson was there! It made me happy. Sort of embarrassed because we lost... oh well. Better luck next time! Right? After the game Toph and I went to costa vida. I don't know why I have never been there before!  It is so delicious! That night. I worked on eight pages of science home work! Bleh! I also worked on writing lyrics and playing my guitar! Today/Sunday- I woke up and I just felt lousy, so, I didn't go to church and have been relaxing all day! Spiritual thought. I can't remember if I have said this before so if I have forgive me! If some one is sitting alone or doesn't have any friends. Or in a missionaries case. They don't even look like they will accept the gospel. Try! Become their best friend! The hardest person to teach could eventually become one of your strongest members!
I love you so much!

Nina.

Dear Elder Carter,
We know there is a high chance that you will not be able to read your letters today due to the celebration of Veterans Day, but we are writing to you on our usual day (Sunday) and our usual time.  I'm writing to you in the car, as Dad and I travel back to St. George.  We have spent the last few days down in LA at a Taxi Convention (Songwriter's Convention).  We have learned a lot of really helpful things and had a wonderful time together too.  We stayed in a nice hotel where the convention was, and ate yummy food from the Subway and McDonalds down the street.  We were really appreciative that McDonalds had free wi fi, since it cost $12 daily at the hotel.  At night we would go get cookies and/or ice cream, sit up in the cozy little alcove upstairs in McDonalds and check our email.  We also went to the ocean on Saturday.  It was cold and very windy, but we still went cuz - hey - it's the beach, it's the ocean!!  Oceans are in short supply in Utah ya know.  Last night we discovered that we were much closer to a beach than we had realized (within 5 miles from our hotel) and we had been a block away last night!  Well, it was dark - but today we paid a visit, and walked on the beach, and touched the water, and chased seagulls who were chilling in long lines on the shore.  It was the perfect way to end our California trip!  So now. . . we are driving home.

How was your week?  I'm glad Daniel's baptism went so well.  I hope you took some pictures.  Was the ward quite involved in the baptismal service?  How are your other investigators doing?  We got your signed notary public paper right before we left.  Thank you for taking care of this.  How is your bike?  Is your companion all the way better now?  Have you eaten any more delicious food?  Do you get to cook very often?  What are your Thanksgiving plans?  Also, and this is urgent!!!   What do you want for Christmas????????????

It's a big week for me.  We are having our holiday party/activity for Relief Society Tuesday Night.  The theme is:  Putting Christ in Your Holidays.  We are also wrapping up the Book of Mormon reading.  We are presenting each sister with a gift of the booklet "The Book of Mormon in 100 Days" and a large picture of the Savior.  We will also have displays about how Christ can be remembered in our homes as we celebrate the season.  We are also having a monologue done of Lehi's wife, Sariah.  Sister Yost wrote it.  I will underscore the piece with live piano music.  I think it will be really nice.  Sister Steele is reading it.  We are also having a very nice meal.  Our committee has been working really hard to get things done for this event.  I've been gone for almost a week and hope it's all ready.  I guess I'll know soon enough.  I'm sure it will be beautiful and hopefully we will have lots of sisters attend.

Wednesday night is YW Night of Excellence with Krisitna.  She is displaying her quilt.  We look forward to sharing this evening with her.

Thursday night is a region wide training for all ward and stake relief society presidencies in a satellite training by the new General Relief Society Presidency.  This is a massive event.  I wonder what we will learn?

Friday??  I can't remember . . . maybe unpack, rest and get ready for Thanksgiving.

This weekend I met a lot of good people whose lives are without the gospel.  They came from 32 different countries and all around thee USA.  We spent time with Amy and Paul Lacey, and were grateful to have friends that had the same values and beliefs as us.  Most of the people were engaged in drinking and swearing just seemed to be part of some of the presentations.  I was waken up out of a sound sleep by a screaming match outside of our hotel room door.  People were yelling at the top of their lungs and the F Bomb was rampant.  Today (the Sabbath) was a far cry from my usual Sunday activities.  I looked around me in the hotel, in parking lots, on the streets, etc. and wondered "Does anyone go to church anymore?"  I still don't have an answer for this question.  I know that this world is in great need of truth.   I felt really grateful that my life had more meaning to it than just trying to write the next "hit song."  Life would be so empty if I didn't have John, my husband, your dad and each of you children in it.  Life would be meaningless without eternal goals - based on so much more than materialism.  The gospel provides joy, and meaning and a true compass to return to our Heavenly Father as a family.  I am grateful for this knowledge that burns deep inside me.  The world needs the gospel!  I'm so glad you are in Texas bringing light and truth to the people there.  I'll do all I can to share the gospel with people around me, and people I meet.

I love you Daniel!
Love,
Your Mama

Dear Daniel (Elder Carter),

I am typing through my cute secretary. I'm going to see if she can keep up with my dictation.  We had a great trip to Los Angeles.  I'm now driving through my favorite part of the road, which is the canyon outside of St. George.  Too bad that it's night time and I can't see anything.  Even though it's dark I can remember how dark it is.  It's like a lot of things.  Sometimes we can't see the beauty but we can remember the beauty.  We touched the ocean today and it reminded me of all the stories in the Book of Mormon about large bodies of water.  I can imagine Nephi standing on the beach chasing seagulls (ha ha ) wondering how in the world he would do what he was asked to do.  And then God gave him instructions.  Karen and  I were lucky enough to experience two types of oceans this trip.  One relatively calm, the other windy and stormy.  It reminded me of the time Karen (Mommy) and I went on our whale watching trip.  The waves rolled like giant mountains and our small boat was just tossed around effortlessly.  The waves were huge!  It reminded me of the scenes you see of stormy seas with the little ship in the middle of it.  Having experienced that I have a sense of what Nephi and his family must have felt when they were on the waters.  So, back to the beach . . . and Nephi getting ready to built a ship, having no clue how huge the storms would be, because the waves don't look so huge when standing on the shore.  Nephi built the ship one step at a time while others laughed at him.  Noah did the same thing.  So now I try to think what ships are we building.  Do we even have a clue to the storms we are going to face?  But then again, it doesn't really matter as long as we build our ship, following the Lord's design.  The design is pretty basic:  He tells us to study the scriptures, pray to  Him, and listen to His promptings.  Those three steps (and there's probably more) will build a ship that will cross any storm.  So build your ship.  Don't stop when others mock you.

Sorry to be so preachy.  We had a blast in Los Angeles.  Basically, because Mama and I were together.  We both resisted the temptation to dye our hair pink, or to die it jet black, which seems to be the second best option for the music world.  Nothing funnier than seeing a 60 year old man with wrinkly skin, receding hairline and jet black hair.  Imagine Grandpa Keith with jet black hair.  We got to see Roxanne and Larry and Nora and we cooked a ton of enchiladas and lasagna for the fridge and freezer only to have our microwave break while we were away.  So, we'll probably have a new microwave next week.  I also gave my class a midterm last week before we left.  I thought it would be easy but I think I stressed out the entire class.  Oh well.

We love you.  We are proud of the work you are doing.  Remember that you are the hands of The Lord to the people of Texas.  Through you he reaches out and blesses others.  Those others may include your companions, your district, or total strangers on the street.  Don't be surprised by the mysterious workings of The Lord.  Love You.  Look forward to hearing from you.  Have a great week.
Love,,
Your Pa
